What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the use of machines or computers to automate and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. They use algorithms and data from various sources to learn and then performs tasks.

AI software is usually trained on thousands to trillions of pieces of information, depending on the model. Some may also be trained using information from the Internet, or may be soon.

What types are there?

The current main excitement surrounding AI is chatbots. The reason is due tot heir ability to have a conversation with humans in a more intuitive and direct way. However, AI has been integrated into countless applications and devices that we often don't even know about. AI can be as simple as machine learning, which for simplicity sakes, is advanced programming that can learn from data and output a response. Many AI applications and devices today rely on machine learning. Some examples of AI you likely use every day, are things like digital assistants, search engines, social media tracking, biometric security, spelling and grammar correction software, etc.

AI chatbots are a language learning model (LLM) which can learn and analyze information from vast amounts of information and communicate it in human-like language.

The main difference is machine learning does things and language models converse in language.

Why use AI?

There are endless reasons, but AI will eventually become an integral part of society whether anyone wants them to or not. It is the next evolution of technology and will vastly improve most existing technology. AI us mostly used for automation of tasks, especially those that are routine tasks. They can help with problem solving, generating ideas, and many many more things discussed in here. Chatbots in particular, can help with things like automating communications and acting like a personal assistant to an individual or business.

Limitations

Accuracy

Currently, most chatbots are not always correct, so be careful and always double-check the information. This may change in the near future, but for now, beware.

Check multiple sources. Most AI chatbots can produce links to where they got their information if you request it from them. Accuracy will change as time goes on and the models are created better. Next versions have been said to be more accurate.

Is AI self-aware?

Currently, there is no known AI which are self-aware, or sentient. Most of the AI today are based upon machine learning, which is software that is trained to recognize patterns, learn from a dataset, then perform tasks. The software is written by humans and uses datasets produced by humans. Therefore, any of the information that is used to perform tasks, are still human-generated.

Is the AI revolution just hype?

There's a lot of people wondering if the new wave of AI is just hype or the next big thing in human history.

Well, the use of the term AI has technically been around for a long time already, it's only recent when it's abilities improved a lot and we reached the next stage of it's evolution. The reality is that it's here to stay and will continue to improve exponentially. It's only recently when people are seeing the potential of AI when ChatGPT and other chatbots came out, seeming a lot more intelligent than past programs. The proof of capabilities became mainstream, and the more people use it the more people are realizing it's potential.

AI will transform a lot of things in society whether we want it to or not. Major breakthroughs in science and medicine are already happening, as proof of it's abilities.

Will it replace my job?

For many decades, technology has continued to improve and replace many of the things we used to do. Innovation leads to change. With AI, advancements may move faster than we have seen before. Many new technologies, jobs, and industries may end up arising in the process. Many jobs that require routine and repetitive tasks will likely be ones most replaced. The bigger issue is how everyone will adapt and reskill during that time, or whether something else will emerge such as universal income or a change in the way we work. The best thing you can likely do is to keep up on how AI is changing your industry so that you can understand what tasks are being replaced and how you can use AI to free up your time for adapting to changes. Just remember, everyone will be adapting at the same time, just try to be a little ahead of everyone else.

Also, as a society, we may also need to face and address issues with inequality, since greater inequality can happen from AI advancements if we don't plan ahead.

The good news is AI might be able to help us address complex issues that arise while AI advances.

How much do chatbots cost?

Currently, there are some that are free to use, but many are or will be based upon a paid or freemium model (free for some things, paid for premium things). Most of the cost is based upon specific use or amount of use. As more models improve, the costs may come down or change depending on different use cases. Some are free to get into the market. Currently, it costs a lot of money to run AI models, which in time they will take far less resources.
